If this endless heat is wilting your appetite, I highly suggest paying a visit to Daylight 光合箱子~ a restaurant that specializes in enormous servings of fresh vegetables, freshly made bread and homemade yogurt. For my first visit, I tried their salmon scrambled eggs, over freshly baked bread. The plate arrived accompanied by the trademark generous serving of salad and roasted vegetables, and a small serving of handmade yogurt.
The entire plate was delicious. However, the star of the show was their handmade yogurt, which was creamy, with just a hint of tanginess, topped with brown sugar and assorted nuts and seeds. This brunch kept me full, yet energized for almost the entire day~ from about 11:00 pm to 6:30 pm, through two meetings! Usually by the end of one of those meetings, I start craving sweets and coffee, but this time, I just sat calmly (and a bit smugly) in my chair, while the others ran out during the break to get their fix.

Doublé L pâtisserie is a small neighborhood shop located discretely near the glittering lights of Taipei 101. The shop front is almost hidden from view from the sidewalk by a bank of leafy green plants. Inside, is a warmly lit, simply decorated, and a perfect spot to spend a rainy afternoon in.

Taipei has really taken afternoon tea to a different level. It’s gotten to a point where it’s no longer acceptable to just have tea, a scone, maybe a slice of cake, and/or a savory. Instead, afternoon tea in many places actually constitutes an entire meal. Buffet style!
Please note, some places do afternoon tea poorly. First, you have to line up in this everlasting queue to just even set foot into the restaurant, then you have to line up for ages just to get your food. If that wasn’t enough, you have to go through more undignified jostling to get desserts and coffee afterwards. The entire experience becomes a “grab what you can, while you can, before someone else gets to it first.” By the time you finish your afternoon tea, you are a grumpy, carb and sugar overloaded mess.
Thankfully, there are some places such as Lar Farfalla, at Humble House that gets it just right.
Located on the 6th floor of Humble House Hotel, you are transported in to a bright and airy space as soon as you alight from the elevator.

Cha Cha Thé in my opinion, is one of the classic tea houses in Taipei. Whenever I have visitors visiting from overseas, I want to take them here to enjoy some of the most serene and delightful afternoon tea experiences in Taipei. The service is always friendly and accommodating, and the food and tea are flawless. During this visit, they were preparing for a private dinner event, but they were kind enough to accommodate us anyway.
The afternoon tea menu changes seasonally, but it’s always lovely to be surprised with different desserts. (you can see the desserts from my first visit here if you like!)
At first, I really didn’t think Taipei needed yet another department store, but I’ve been warming up to the new Breeze Department store, which is located in the heart of the Xinyi District. It’s now home to my beloved Crate & Barrel, and also one of my new favorites to go for afternoon tea, Cova. Cova is an Italian patisserie from Milan, and their specialties are chocolate and of course, their desserts.
Since April, I’ve been there quite a few times; both on my own, and with friends. Each time, I’ve found their service to be warm, friendly and considerate.
One of my standby favorite cafes in Taipei is Labu Cafe. (Labu the phonetic pronunciation for the Japanese word “love.”) It’s a place where I really feel comfortable either going on my own and getting some reading or work done, or taking a friend for a leisurely chat and cup of coffee. My most recent visit was during an afternoon torrential rainstorm. (Side note: we are in the middle of typhoon season and the weather goes from blazing hot sun, to overcast and pouring down sheets of rain in the matter of minutes).
I ordered a Croque Madame, which to me is fancy grilled cheese~ it’s a toasted ham and cheese sandwich topped with a perfect sunny side up egg. At Labu, it’s served with a generous portion of salad and a thoughtful side of French fries (since nothing is worse than having to choose between both).
And of course, I had to have coffee. I ordered their regular latte, which arrives on a wooden tray with cute wooden animal knickknacks. The coffee itself is strong and hearty, and gave me the energy to brave the typhoon.

最近發覺了：”找到咖啡館” 環境蠻舒適的～空間很大 而且就在台大校園的角落。 窗外有綠油油的樹， 還有台大的網球場。 我本來是要來這邊工作的～但很快就被網球場的 view 分心了。
Lately, I’ve been seriously absentminded. It takes me forever to form a coherent train of thoughts. My friend Peggy says, it’s actually one way your brain gets a chance for a rest. If I can recommend one place to do a little day dreaming, it’s here at Cafe Trouvé
Cafe Trouvé has spacious outdoors seating that looks out onto the trees surrounding NTU’s campus. There is only a small window of opportunity to sit outside in Taiwan…and it’s right about now. Otherwise it’s a bit too cold and and damp in the winter, and completely too hot and humid in the summer. (and you would be carried away by the mosquitos)
