One of my favorite past times is brunch.  I love it, because I don’t have to wake up early and afterwards, I still have plenty of appetite for afternoon tea.  Luckily for me, I was absolutely spoiled for brunch choices in Melbourne, because there are so many different possibilities.  In the interest of time, Peter helped me narrow down my list with some of his favorite places.  One of his first recommendations was Auction Rooms, located in North Melbourne.

This cavernous brick building used to be an actual auction house (hence the name).  The building is filled with natural sunlight, filtering in from the floor to ceiling windows.  There is ample seating, with both indoor and outdoor options.

Even on a weekday, the place was filled with the chatter and bustle of people enjoying brunch, or just stopping by for a quick takeaway coffee.

We chose a seat in the outdoors seating area, so we could enjoy the sunshine.  Our drinks orders were taken as soon as we were seated~ thank goodness, because by that time during the day, I really needed a coffee! (or a flat white, to be exact).

In addition to a flat white, I ordered the Arepa e’huevo, which is Colombian corn pancakes, topped with a sunny-side up egg, and lebanese cucumber, sweet corn salsa, creme fraiche, tomato, with chilli jam on the side.

The corn pancakes were amazing.  The texture is slightly chewy, and is both sweet and savory in flavor.  The salsa and creme fraiche provided a light and refreshing accompaniment.

Peter ordered the capocollo ham, which had compressed watermelon, aged manchego, grana pop corn, straw mushrooms, baby peppers, and cured egg yolk; which also had an inventive balance of sweet and savory and different textures (yes, that’s popcorn!)

I think the best part of being on vacation is that you get to do activities that are out of your daily routine~ and for me, such an activity is brunch on a week day, on a Tuesday, no less.  Tuesdays are usually my busiest day at work, where I am basically working nonstop for 11-12 hours in a row, so it felt extremely indulgent to bask in the warm Melbourne sun, while enjoying delicious food and conversation.  After our satisfying brunch, we also visited Mork Chocolate, which was just up the street.  Come back next week and see the goodies I got there!

Enjoy!
