This day had two firsts~ my first visit to Chantez Patisserie, and my first taste of fresh fig. Chantez is located in one of the quieter neighborhoods in Da-An district.  It’s an easy 5 minute walk from Zhongxiao Xinsheng Station, Exit 6. Right across, there is an old fashioned restored two story building, that is quite rare to see in Taipei.  During my visit there, I stared dreamily at the house, imagining how lovely it would be to live there.

The ordering procedure at Chantez is simple~ you order drinks at the table, and if you would like a dessert, then you can order it directly from the pastry case at the front of the store.

The staff  at Chantez is very knowledgable.  When they describe the desserts, it sounds like they eat (and enjoy them) on a regular basis.  So they are not just rattling off a list of random ingredients, but they are describing the nuances in flavor of each tart and cake.

The staff’s detailed description is how I got over my fear of fig.  Prior to today, my knowledge of the flavor of figs came from the dried variety. Which I don’t particularly enjoy, for a number of reasons, too sweet, and the texture of all those little seeds just sends shivers up my spine.  But after hearing the enthusiastic description from the staff behind the counter, I knew I had to take the plunge.

The fig tart is called “Spring Light”, and has a base of lemon-lime cake, and is topped with matcha cream, and whipped cream.  The entire tart is encircled by white chocolate (dyed pink) and topped by fresh fig.  The tart was deliciously structured to have descending levels of sweetness, the sweetest parts deriving from the fig slices, and the whipped cream.  The matcha cream and the lemon-lime cake base were tinged with slight bitterness and tang, which complimented the sweetness beautifully.

I enjoyed the dessert and ambiance at Chantez~ I wish the tables were spaced just a little further apart~ the gap between the tables is very slight, making getting in and out of your chair a bit awkward.  However, other than that, the experience, service and of course desserts were perfection.

Enjoy!
