Summers in Taiwan are brutal. The heat is blistering, the humidity is off the charts, and tempers flare over the tiniest things. Most people spend a lot of time thinking how to get through the day without getting completely enervated. One of my solutions is to hide in different coffee shops throughout the city.  At first I would optimistically lug all my work papers and laptop with me, in the hopes that a change of scene would help me get my work done. But lately, I’ve discovered the only real productive way for me to work is at home, with the curtains drawn against the blazing sun and the air conditioning turned on high.  Now, when I do have the chance to visit cafes, I go with the intention of just relaxing and zoning out.  Elsewhere Cafe, a small cafe located in one of the older, tree lined neighborhoods in Taipei, near Chiang-Kai Shek Memorial Hall, is one of those perfect places to do just that.

There are comfortable nooks and crannies in the cafe where you can sit down and browse through the books.  Most of them are colorful picture books, alongside some magazines and novels.

Elsewhere Cafe is known for their desserts~ especially a matcha millefeuille, which is only available certain days of the week.  Since I was meeting a friend for dinner soon after, I settled for a matcha latte, and spent about 45 minutes browsing through some of the books on display.

At first I didn’t notice that the cafe was a bit warm, temperature-wise.  But about 20 minutes later I could feel a headache coming on. It was then I realized that the air conditioners in the space were quite tiny, and a lot of the cooling was left to ceiling and floor fans.  To be honest, it’s not the coolest environment to be in at this time of year, especially if it is filled with people. (This is definitely not a deal breaker~ but just be aware you will be rather warm here).

(I couldn’t resist snapping and sharing a photo of this cute lamp~ I love it and wish I knew where I could get one! )

There is also a pretty outdoors space, filled with plants, which I imagine it would be very pleasant in the fall and winter months.  I enjoyed my brief visit to Elsewhere Cafe. I love that it’s open early in the morning, even on the weekends, and I can’t wait to go back again when the weather cools down.

Enjoy!
