Field Trip: Caffe 4MANO 咖啡

I first stumbled across Caffe 4Mano one Sunday afternoon.  I was desperate for a cup of coffee, so I popped in. I only got as far as the front step before I was stopped by a staff member with a clipboard, who in the nicest way possible informed me that there was a 2 hour wait (on-site!!).  So I decided to grab a cup of coffee to go across the street at Louisa’s Coffee, and save 4Mano for another day.

The next time I was in the neighborhood, it was a weekday, so there was no wait.  The waitress was nice and friendly and she led me to a table inside.  Unfortunately, the table was situated right in front of the bathroom door.  It wasn’t too disruptive if people remembered to close the door, but otherwise you could hear the toilet flushing, and it was a bit distracting.

At Caffe4Mano, they bring you your first glass of water, when they give you the menu and then you’re on your own to fill it yourself afterwards.  It’s a bit unusual for cafes in Taipei,  but you order and pay at the counter.  There is a minimum order of at least one drink.  I decided to give myself a treat and order a latte with Bailey’s Irish Cream.  I never do this, so it felt very indulgent indeed. It arrived nice and strong, with a generous swirl of whipped cream.

I also ordered a smoked salmon ciabatta. The ciabatta was freshly toasted, and had a delicious flavored mayo, instead of the typical cream cheese, which I thought was fresh and light. The salad was a bit tired, because it was mostly just iceburg lettuce, with a really sour vinaigrette.

Caffe 4Mano is conveniently located right near MRT Xingsheng Station, Exit 2, and overall, it’s a pleasant place to grab a cup of coffee and a quick bite to eat.  Some of the neighboring tables ordered some delicious looking waffles, which may be worth a try next time.

The cute cafe dog who was napping in the front window.
